It’s been 81 years since the Nazi Germans began the so-called “Grossaktion Warschau” – a huge deportation of Jews to the extermination camp in Treblinka. From July 22 to September 21, 1942, from Umschlagplatz – the square at Stawki Street from which transportations to the gas chambers took place – as well as on the overcrowded trains going to the camp, and in Treblinka itself, nearly 300,000 Jews were murdered. As every year, we will pay tribute to the victims of deportation.

This year's March of Remembrance will be dedicated to the resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto, which preceded the outbreak of the uprising on April 19, 1943. Contrary to popular belief, the uprising was not spontaneous, it was preceded by months of preparations for armed struggle and years of underground work: initially, underground organizations focused on education, publishing underground press and providing support to their sympathizers – with time, when the first news about the extermination of Jews on a mass scale, the organization of armed resistance began to be considered.

The March of Remembrance will be accompanied by the outdoor exhibition “Roots of Uprising. Resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto”, which will present various circles of Jewish underground activists during the German occupation, their strategies, methods of operation, and the dynamics of cooperation. The story will revolve around the fate of several activists: representatives of various generations and political groups and environments. We want to show their joint effort and cooperation, but also the difficulties they faced.

The exhibition will take the form of a flower carpet overgrown with blooming plants of the Muranów district, which grew spontaneously in gardens and courtyards before the war, and then were the first to return to the rubble and are still found in the area today. The plants were selected on the basis of research by Prof. Roman Kobendza from 1945-1949.

The March will start on July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Umschlagplatz monument in Warsaw (10 Stawki St, on the corner of Dzika St) and will follow the symbolic route "from death to life", which will end at the Square of the Home Army Scout Battalion "Wigry" (next to the Muranów cinema), where the exhibition "Roots of the Uprising" will be opened and an outdoor concert will take place.

The March of Remembrance will begin on July 21, 2023, at 6:00 p.m.

Route: Umschlagplatz –Stawki – Dubois – Zamenhofa – Nowolipki – Andersa – Andersa – Square of the Home Army Scout Battalion "Wigry" (next to the Muranów cinema)

At the beginning of the event, volunteers will distribute symbolic Ribbons of Remembrance with names of murdered Jewish deportees and refugees. The ribbons will be tied to the elements of the outdoor exhibition "Roots of Uprising".
