Conference around the research project »Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Ghetto«
On May 28-29, the Jewish Historical Institute will host a conference concluding a research project that has lasted several years. “Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Ghetto” (implemented under a grant from the National Program for the Development of the Humanities). A group of several researchers aimed to develop a comprehensive compendium of knowledge about the Warsaw Ghetto, taking into account threads scattered in various archival sources and publications.

During the conference, researchers will present some of the results of their research. We will talk about everyday life in the ghetto, the (dys)functioning of ghetto institutions, political activities, as well as the visual and sound landscapes of the ghetto. In addition to the thematic panels, we also invite you to two debates. The first one will be devoted to the current state of knowledge about the Warsaw Ghetto, and the second one will be dedicated to the challenges related to creating online encyclopedias and historical lexicons.

The comprehensive research results on the “Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Ghetto” will be made available in two forms: books containing a selection of over 50 problem, personal and thematic entries, and a website where users will have access to over 2,200 entries.

Thanks to its integration with the IT tools used by the Jewish Historical Institute to make its collections available, the online Encyclopedia will enable tracking connections between people, organizations, events and places, scans of original documents and photographs illustrating individual entries.

The conference will be held in the JHI hall in the Blue Tower (Plac Bankowy 2, entrance from Tłomackie St.) and will be broadcast live on the JHI YouTube.
