„Superhuman medicine” of Adina Blady-Szwajger
Adina Blady-Szwajger, pediatrician in the Warsaw Ghetto’s Bersohn and Bauman Children’s Hospital and friend of Marek Edelman, was born on March 21st, 1917.
Purim – the Festival of Lots

Commemorating the 75th anniversary of Emanuel Ringelblum’s death
2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the death of Emanuel Ringelblum, patron of the Jewish Historical Institute. We have planned a number of events in memory and honour of the founder of the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto. We would like to invite everyone to join the mission of popularizing the legacy of the Oneg Shabbat group.
Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Ghetto
A multidisciplinary project planned for many years: a virtual Encyclopedia of the Warsaw Ghetto – has begun at the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute. The Encyclopedia will be a synthesis of all works on the complete edition of the Ringelblum Archive. In January 1942, Szlama Ber Winer managed to escape from the extermination camp in Chełmno nad Nerem (Kulmhof an der Nehr). He safely reached the Warsaw Ghetto, where he received help from members of the Oneg Shabbat group – Hersz Wasser and his wife Bluma, who in February 1942 wrote down Szlama’s detailed testimony of mass extermination of people in gas vans in Chelmno. On 18 January 2019, an agreement of cooperation with the Memorial de la Shoah was signed at the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute.
The January deportation from the Warsaw Ghetto
The Germans had planned the beginning of the second stage of liquidation of the ghetto for 18 January 1943. The goal was to deport about 8,000 people to Treblinka. For the first time, the Jews had responded with armed resistance. The struggle lasted for only four days, but – as Cywia Lubetkin recalled after the war — „the German plan to deport all the remaining Jews of Warsaw to Treblinka was prevented”. The next volume of the English edition of the Ringlelblum Archive
From January 14, the second volume of translations of the full edition of the Ringelblum Archive entitled „Accounts from borderlands, 1939–1941” will be available for sale. Translation of all volumes is one of the elements of the Oneg Szabat Program.
Emanuel Ringelblum’s writings in the complete edition of the Archive
The complete Polish edition of the Ringelblum Archive was expanded with two valuable volumes: Emanuel Ringelblum’s writings from the ghetto and from the „Krysia” bunker.
Simcha Rathajzer-Rotem died in Jerusalem
Simcha Rathajzer-Rotem, also known by his nom de guerre „Kazik”, died in Jerusalem. He was one of the last surviving Jewish fighters in the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

Journalist, social activist. Her efforts, continuing in the difficult period of post-war reconstruction, when the significance of the hidden documentation wasn’t yet realized, contributed to the discovery of the Archive in the ruins of the Warsaw Ghetto. 18 December marks the 120th anniversary of Rachela Auerbach’s birth.
